چکیده

Fossil specimens of the exclusively oceanic calcareous nannoplankton were found only in the upper 200 m of the Cape Roberts Project 3 (CRP-3) cores. These assemblages are depauperate and sporadic in occurrence. The majority of the assemblages contain fewer than 4 species, indicating a severe palaeoecological restriction. The clear domination of these assemblages by reticulofenestrid species, coupled with the almost total exclusion of Coccolithus pelagicus, indicates cold surface water conditions in the Victoria Land Basin during the lives of these poor algae. These cold surface water conditions, perhaps coupled with abnormal surface water chemistry, excluded almost all of the age-diagnostic species from the area. The occurrence of Transversopontis pulcheroides, however, suggests a biostratigraphic assignment of lower Oligocene for this part of the core. The CRP-3 assemblages occur within fine-grained clastic sedimentary rocks, but only those that are in close stratigraphical proximity with coarser-grained lithologies.

Palaeogene Calcareous Nannofossils from CRP-2/2A, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica

Rare calcareous nannofossils from the Cape Roberts Project drillhole CRP-2A indicate that this area was episodically invaded by marginal oceanic surface waters during the late and late early Oligocene. These depauperate assemblages lack most of the biostratigraphic index fossils for the Oligocene, but do provide two datums that aid in constraining the age of the section: the last appearance dat...

Magnetostratigraphy of Late Eocene - Early Oligocene Strata from the CRP-3 Core, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica

The Cape Roberts Project was successfully completed in the austral spring of 1999 with drilling of the 939.42-m CRP-3 drillhole, located 2-km west of the CRP-2/2A drillhole. The CRP-3 core comprises a 790-m Cenozoic (glacio-) marine sequence separated from underlying Devonian basement rocks by a c. 30-mthick dolerite conglomerate of undetermined age. Here, we present the results of a palaeomagn...

Environmental Magnetic Record of the Eocene-Oligocene Transition in CRP-3 Drillcore, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica

A 1500-m-thick Cenozoic sequence was recovered in a series of 3 drill holes from the Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, in association with the Cape Roberts Project. The CRP-3 drill hole penetrated the oldest Palaeogene strata in the Granite Harbour region and terminated in strata from the Devonian Beacon Supergroup. The upper 823-m of the CRP-3 drill-core is an expanded sequence that may span th...

Magnetostratigraphic chronology of a late Eocene to early Miocene glacimarine succession from the Victoria Land Basin, Ross Sea, Antarctica

Drilling offshore from Cape Roberts, Antarctica, has enabled recovery of a 1472-m cumulative record of late Eocene–early Miocene history of sedimentary basin development and climate change in the Western Ross Sea. In this paper, we synthesize the results of palaeomagnetic analyses carried out on the CRP-1, CRP-2 and CRP-3 sediment cores, and present a chronology for the recovered Eocene–Miocene...

Sedimentary Cyclicity in CRP Drillcore, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica

The upper 1200 m of pre-Pliocene sediment recovered by Cape Roberts Project (CRP) drilling off the Victoria Land coast of Antarctica between 1997-1999 has been subdivided into 54 unconformity-bound stratigraphic sequences, spanning the period c. 32 to 17 Ma. The sequences are recognised on the basis of the cyclical vertical stacking of their constituent lithofacies, which are enclosed by erosio...
